Furmanek and Horton Author Article on “First to File” for The Illinois Manufacturer

Michael P. Furmanek and Benjamin T. Horton authored “First to File: The race to the patent office is on,” published in the Fall 2013 edition of The Illinois Manufacturer. Their article provides an overview of the changes to the United States patent system resulting from the America Invents Act (AIA) and discusses strategies manufacturers might consider as they seek to protect their ideas under First-to-File.

Mr. Furmanek, chair of the Firm’s Mechanical Engineering practice group, focuses on preparing and prosecuting patent applications, both domestic and abroad, as well as advising clients on patent portfolio management, patentability, patent enforcement, and related concerns. He also has experience counseling clients on general trademark matters.

Mr. Horton’s practice focuses on complex litigation involving patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Mr. Horton has a degree in electrical engineering, and before law school he worked for technology companies in the automotive and semiconductor industries. He is a member of the Trial Bar for the Northern District of Illinois and litigates intellectual property actions in federal courts across the country.
