Marshall Gerstein Elects Two New Partners

Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP is pleased to announce the election to partnership of Drew Bateman and Matt Carey, effective January 1, 2017, bringing the Firm’s partner count to 43. Drew and Matt are members of the Firm’s increasingly active and sizeable Electrical & Computer Technologies group, a practice that continues to expand and serve clients in a wide variety of current and emerging technologies.

Andrew Bateman prosecutes and protects the patent portfolios of clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to start-ups, and advises clients on numerous other patent-related matters. Drew’s practice of preparing and prosecuting patent applications is seasoned by his patent litigation experience and supported by a full decade of research and development work as an electrical engineer. This knowledge base and skill set allows Drew to efficiently and effectively protect clients’ intellectual property rights in even the most complex technologies. Drew has successfully prosecuted patents for clients in widely diverse industries, such as software, communication, medical devices, insurance, and financial services industries. Drew has also provided clients with numerous freedom-to-operate and other patent related opinions, and has assessed the scope of many patents and pending patent applications.

Prior to becoming an attorney, Drew worked for 10 years at Motorola as an electrical engineer, where he researched, designed and tested radio frequency hardware systems for a wide variety of wireless communication platforms. He earned his J.D. with high honors at Chicago-Kent College of Law. During law school he served as an executive articles editor of the Chicago-Kent Law Review, and served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Amy J. St. Eve in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, with honors, at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and a Master of Science in electrical engineering at National Technological University.

Matthew R. Carey is a registered patent attorney who counsels clients in the electrical and software engineering industry as it relates to patenting strategies as well as all stages of patent prosecution. His engineering background enables him to effectively and efficiently provide a range of patent procurement services to the clients for whom he works. Matt also leverages his experience to assist on intellectual property litigation as well as develop strategies for acquiring and protecting intellectual property.

Matt previously worked as an intellectual property attorney for a variety of clients from startup companies to Fortune 500 corporations. He also worked for two years as a patent agent for a boutique IP firm. Matt gained technical experience in electrical and computer engineering in prior roles as an analyst for a national IT consulting firm and as a financial derivatives trader. Matt received his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he also completed the Intellectual Property Law Certificate Program. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
