MGB Attorney Establishes LGBT Patent Law Scholarship

February 17, 2009

Jeremy D. Protas, an attorney with the intellectual property law firm of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, announces the establishment of a Patent Law Scholarship specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender law students intending to pursue a legal career in the field of patent law. “Diversity in the legal community, and especially in the patent law community, is important to me. My hope is that this scholarship will encourage LGBT law students to consider careers in patent law at firms that share my commitment,” Protas said.

Candidates must be second-year students for the 2009–2010 academic year at an American Bar Association-accredited law school, and be eligible to sit for the Patent Bar Exam. Applications for the $1,000 scholarship are due by July 31, 2009. Applications and information can be found at http://www.protas.org/scholarship.

Protas joined Marshall Gerstein as a summer associate in 2003 and 2004, and in 2005 joined the firm as a full-time associate. He is involved in both patent prosecution and litigation in technical fields related to optical, semiconductor, and mechanical devices, process control, and business methods. Protas received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2000. While a student, he completed an internship at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a NASA-affiliated laboratory), participating in the redesign, development, and implementation of S-band and X-band transmitters in NASA’s Deep Space Network. Following graduation, Protas worked as a digital design engineer for Motorola, designing GSM mobile telephony infrastructure. He received his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law in 2005, and is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
