October 14, 2016
Chicago, IL

Julianne M. Hartzell, partner and chair of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun’s medical devices practice, will participate as a panelist during Practising Law Institute (PLI)'s Patent Litigation Program 2016. The program will take place on October 13–14, 2016, at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center in Chicago, IL. For more information about the program, click here.

Ms. Hartzell will participate in “NPEs – The Special Issues Arising from Disputes with NPEs” at 10:00 a.m. on October 14, 2016. The panel will provide perspectives on litigating on behalf of, or against, non-practicing entities (NPEs) that are asserting patent rights.  Plaintiff’s counsel will offer perspectives on representing litigants that may or may not have deep pockets, as well as effective strategies when the opponent is the larger, more entrenched entity, including ways to manage multi-party litigation and discovery.  Defense counsel will share tips on evolving legal and practical strategies to mitigate the impact of abusive tactics by some NPEs, including early resolution/disposition techniques, smart motion practice, and effective use of joint defense groups.

At Marshall Gerstein, Ms. Hartzell works with inventors and corporations in the fields of consumer products, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and internet technology. She handles all forms of intellectual property litigation, including patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret litigation. She also has experience enforcing covenants not-to-compete and confidentiality agreements. Ms. Hartzell obtained her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and previously earned a B.S. in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.
