Pamela L. Cox, partner, and Julie M. Watson, licensing specialist, of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP have earned the Certified Licensing Professional™ (CLP) credential.  Cox and Watson join a growing group of intellectual property professionals that have demonstrated their dedication to higher standards of practice in the licensing industry.

The CLP™ designation distinguishes licensing professionals who have demonstrated their experience and proficiency in licensing and the commercialization of intellectual property.  It is built on internationally applicable standards of practice, knowledge and ethics to differentiate licensing professionals who have taken the steps necessary to become certified.

After extensive industry research, the CLP™ certification was created as an initiative of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) (USA and Canada), Inc. to recognize licensing professionals who are committed to professional development and the attainment of the skills and knowledge necessary to perform their jobs at the highest level of quality.  LES has established itself as the leader in the licensing field and is steadfastly dedicated to the professional development of its constituents (members and otherwise).

Cox handles licensing and other intellectual property-related transactions for a range of clients from start-up organizations to non-profit institutions to multi-national corporations.  Cox was the 2007 Chair of the Licensing Executives Society, Chicago Chapter and is a frequent speaker and active participant in several professional organizations, such as the Association of University Technology Managers, the Intellectual Property Owners Association (former subcommittee chair of licensing) and the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago.  Cox received her J.D. from the University of Notre Dame School of Law (2000) and her B.S. in biology from Indiana University (1995). 

Watson is involved in intellectual property licensing, competitive intelligence research and technology transfer.  She is a frequent speaker and active participant in professional licensing organizations including the Association of University Technology Managers and the Licensing Executives Society.  Watson received her M.A. in biopsychology from Johns Hopkins University (1984) and her B.A. in biology and psychology from Coe College (1979).

To become a CLP™ certificant, Cox and Watson met requirements in three areas:

• Education – Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university
• Experience – At least five years of professional-level experience involving the development, use, transfer, marketing and/or management of IP within the past eight years.
• Demonstrated proficiency is the licensing and commercialization of intellectual property.
