In the February edition of MX:Medtech Executive Magazine, Paul C. Craane discusses the procedures for extending patent protection beyond the domestic market. In "Device Patents: Think Globally, File Locally," Mr. Craane highlights those programs that exist to moderate the costs of obtaining foreign patent protection. In particular, he explains the benefits of the Patent Cooperation Treaty, the European Patent Office, and the Patent Prosecution Highways. Further, Mr. Craane discusses the disparate treatment of medical devices and methods around the world, and how these differences affect patentability and enforcement.
Paul C. Craane is the Chair of the Medical Devices Group at Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP. For nearly twenty years, Paul has been responsible for obtaining and enforcing patents in the U.S. and in foreign jurisdictions, particularly in Europe.
