Michael P. Furmanek focuses his practice primarily on preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical and electro-mechanical arts. Mr. Furmanek has also gained substantial experience rendering various patent-related legal opinions.
Mr. Furmanek has assisted a variety of clients in the following technical areas:
- Mechanics (fluid process control devices, automotive drive-train components, fuel delivery systems, exhaust systems, power tools, household goods, bottling equipment)
- Electro-mechanics (occupant safety systems, navigation systems, fuel cells, fluid pumps, silicon-based electronic devices)
- Bio-mechanics (orthopedic implants, orthopedic surgical devices)
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Furmanek served as in-house patent counsel for an automotive parts manufacturer in Nagoya, Japan. While in Japan, he managed the preparation and prosecution of multinational patent applications in a variety of technical fields. He also assisted his Japanese coworkers in further developing their own U.S. patent drafting and prosecuting skills.
Mr. Furmanek received his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law where he was a member of the DePaul Law Review and received the DePaul College of Law Top Scholar Scholarship. Before attending law school, he received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
