Paul B. Stephens brings all his experience to bear in support of his clients – whether as a scientist or manager or litigator.  In particular, his engineering background lets him connect readily with the scientists doing very complex research within an organization.

For example, applying his experience as a graduate research in optics has proved a decided advantage for many clients seeking patents in optical, laser and photonic technologies, such as adaptive optics, spectroscopy, imaging, optical switches, optoelectronic sensors, thin films, and short laser pulse phenomena.

Within his litigation practice, Mr. Stephens has represented clients in patent, trademark and trade dress litigation.  Having seen the other side of a case, particularly before a jury, even in his counseling he can share highly pragmatic insights about what clients may face regarding their rights.  Mr. Stephens has managed the technical aspects of the liability phases of numerous litigation matters.  He has served as second chair in a successful patent infringement jury trial, and has extensive experience in depositions, motion practice, and expert witness preparation.

Mr. Stephens received his J.D. from The University of Michigan Law School in 1998.  He received his M.S.E. in Electrical Engineering and his B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering, magna cum laude, both from the University of Michigan College of Engineering.  His graduate research was performed at the National Science Foundation Center for Ultrafast Optical Science in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Publications and Speeches

Mr. Stephens often speaks on diversity issues, such as his participation in a "Roundtable Discussion on Diversity" at the 2008 Microsoft Women and Minority Law Student IP Summit.  The program focused on career development, recruiting and retention for minorities and women in law firms and corporate legal departments.
