Marshall Gerstein Expands with Five Team Members, Including Three Attorneys

Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP announces the expansion of its Chicago office with the addition of Joseph A. Saltiel as special counsel, and Thomas R. Burns and John J. Lucas as associates. Peter J.W. Melsa, patent agent, and Serge Minin, Ph.D., technical specialist, have also joined the Firm.

Joseph A. Saltiel is a first chair litigator with experience successfully representing clients in courts across the country, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the ITC.  He also counsels clients on IP matters such as licensing, opinions, and related commercial agreements. He earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of Illinois at Chicago and his law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law. Prior to law school, he worked in the telecommunications industry.

Thomas R. Burns is a patent litigator with a focus on representing clients in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. He has extensive experience representing both pharmaceutical innovators and generic drug manufacturing clients in all aspects of Hatch-Waxman patent litigation, along with experience in biologics litigation and inter partes review petitions before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his undergraduate degree in genetics from Iowa State University and his law degree from Boston University School of Law.

John J. Lucas defends clients against infringement claims. While attending law school, Lucas served as a law clerk for two intellectual property law firms in Chicago. He earned his undergraduate degree from Villanova University and his law degree from DePaul University College of Law.

Peter J.W. Melsa prosecutes patents for clients in all areas of electrical, software and computer technologies. His industry experience includes extensive knowledge of broadband communications and signal processing. He holds 24 U.S. patents. He earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and his Master of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from North Carolina State University.

Serge Minin, Ph.D. assists in prosecuting patents for clients in the electrical and software technology industries. His advanced education and industry experience includes extensive knowledge in the areas of electronics, lasers, optics, instrumentation, communications and signal processing. He earned his undergraduate degree, Master of Science degree and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
