Biography
Kevin is a registered patent agent who secures domestic and foreign intellectual property rights to promote the interests of clients ranging from emerging startups to elite research universities and Fortune 500 companies. Kevin counsels clients through patentability investigations, patent drafting and filing strategy, domestic and overseas prosecution, appeals, and strategic portfolio analyses.
Before becoming a patent agent, Kevin studied computer science and interned as a software engineer in the automotive and healthcare software industries. Kevin uses his experience conceiving and developing user-facing applications to capture the novelty and subject matter eligibility of software inventions ranging across various industries.
Kevin serves as a member of the firm’s peer-elected Associates Committee.
Outside of work, Kevin can be found competing in various Chicago sports leagues on the court, beach, or field.
Representative Experience
- Developed prosecution strategies involving provisional patents and over a dozen U.S. and international patent applications to secure protection for improvements to process control systems representing a major shift in process control technology.
- Prepared patent applications, secured foundational patents, and provided IP educations to engineers for a rapidly growing startup, monitoring the development and identifying patentable concepts in a popular e-commerce platform.
- Drafted and prosecuted patent applications to secure patent rights in the U.S., Canada, Europe, China, Japan, Australia, and other jurisdictions.

Background and Credentials
Prior to joining Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, Mr. Piotrowski worked in computer science and software development at a privately held healthcare software company. There, he was part of a small team that brought the company’s health software applications to a new platform. Previously, in the automotive industry, Mr. Piotrowski worked on complex programs related to business analyses and beta tested programs with end user groups.
Mr. Piotrowski received his B.S. in computer science and engineering from Michigan State University.
