Ertel and Gerstein Honored Among World’s Top Intellectual Property Strategists

July 1, 2009

Two firm partners have been recognized as among the world’s leading intellectual property strategists by Intellectual Asset Management magazine. Patrick D. Ertel and Robert M. Gerstein are the only partners from an intellectual property boutique firm to be accorded this honor and among just a handful of Illinois lawyers to be recognized.

The IAM 250 – the World’s Leading IP Strategists identifies those individuals who offer world-class services related to the development and implementation of strategies that enable intellectual property owners to maximize the value of their rights portfolios. Attorneys, consultants, financiers and intermediaries from around the world were nominated, and only those who demonstrate “exceptional skill sets, as well as profound insights into the development, creation and management of intellectual property value” were selected, according to the magazine.

“Having two of our partners named to the IAM 250 is further recognition of our leadership in the area of intellectual property law,” said Jeff Sharp, managing partner of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun. “Like many of our attorneys, Bob and Pat bring very specific technical expertise to the table, with engineering degrees and real-world experience that informs their strategic insights and delivers superior value to our clients.”

Mr. Gerstein has been with Marshall, Gerstein & Borun since 1988. His intellectual property practice focuses especially on patent and trademark licensing transactions, along with copyright, unfair competition and contract litigation. He is also experienced in patent and trademark prosecution. Among other honors, Gerstein was recommended by his peers as a Leading Lawyer and was voted an Illinois Super Lawyer. He is also a member of the firm’s executive committee.

Mr. Ertel has cultivated a niche practice in counseling major corporations and technology-based start-ups on strategic planning issues centered on intellectual property. In his 35 years of practice, he has become known for negotiating and drafting technology-based agreements to extract full value from his clients’ intellectual property. He has authored numerous articles on the philosophical and ethical issues related to technology transfer and also was recommended by his peers as a Leading Lawyer and voted an Illinois Super Lawyer.

Published six times a year, Intellectual Asset Management magazine is the only publication globally to focus on intellectual property as a business asset, with an audience at the C-suite and boardroom level in companies and corporations on all the major indices.
