Mr. Craane has worked with a wide variety of technologies in a number of different industries, including:
- Drug delivery and fluid administration devices, including vial adapters, luer-activated connectors, syringes, autoinjectors and intravenous sets and pumps
- Surgical instruments and medical lasers
- Analytical systems associated with and utilizing high-density oligonucleotide microarrays
- Processing of biomass for conversion into biofuels or disposal
- Bioreactors and digesters for conversion of biomass into biofuels
- Vibratory conveyors, feeders, separators and shakeouts
- Machining processes, as well as chip collection and fluid reclamation
- Networking and programming of programmable devices, such as computers and programmable controllers
- Casino gaming devices, such as video poker and video slot machines
- Condensers, evaporators and heat exchangers for automotive, residential and commercial applications
- Consumer goods, including office products such as mailers, envelopes, pens and correction fluid dispensers, and health and personal hygiene products
- Sporting goods and toys, including fishing reels, electronic games, and educational toys
Mr. Craane has a firm foundation in U.S. law and practice. He has regularly appeared before the United States Patent and Trademark Office for nearly 20 years and has successfully handled such specialty proceedings as reissues, reexaminations and interferences. Mr. Craane has litigated cases in various U.S. district courts and has been admitted to and involved in appellate work before the Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Seventh Circuit.
He is also well versed in foreign patent prosecution and has formulated and executed tailored prosecution strategies for numerous international filings. He has unique experience with practice before the European Patent Office, including briefing and managing opposition proceedings. He has coordinated the simultaneous prosecution and litigation of matters in the U.S. and foreign countries.
Mr. Craane received his B.S., with highest honors (University Honors – Bronze Tablet), in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Northern Illinois University College of Law.
While in law school, he was a Notes and Comments editor on Law Review. His student article, "At the Boundaries of Law and Equity: The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Doctrine of Equivalents," 13 N. Ill. Univ. L. Rev. 106 (1992), has been cited in two Federal Circuit opinions: Hilton Davis Chemical Co. v. Warner-Jenkinson Co., 62 F.3d 1512, 1537 n.2 (Fed. Cir. 1995) (J. Plager) and Festo Corp. v. Shoketsu Kinzoku Kogyo Kabushiki Co., 234 F.3d 558, 621 (Fed. Cir. 2000) (J. Linn).
