Meggan Duffy, head of the 3D Printing Taskforce of the Medical Device Practice at Marshall Gerstein, said that the expiration of these patents motivated several people to join the marketplace.

“As [some core 3D-printing technologies] became part of the public domain, more people realized they could have the benefits of 3D printing with potentially lower costs,” she said. “And they saw they could use this technology without having to pay licenses because [those technologies are] now in the public domain.”
