November 18, 2011

Jeremy D. Protas, an attorney with the intellectual property law firm of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP, located in Chicago, Illinois, announced award of the 2011 Jeremy D. Protas LGBT Patent Law Scholarship in the amount of $1000 to a third year Northwestern law student studying patent law. LGBT lawyers are especially difficult to find among the patent bar. My hope is that this scholarship encourages LGBT law students to pursue a career as a patent lawyer.”

Eligible candidates for the 2011 scholarship were students for the 2011–2012 academic year at an American Bar Association-accredited law school, and who were eligible to sit for the Patent Bar Exam. Information can be found at http://jeremy.protas.org/scholarship/.

Mr. Protas is an associate at Marshall Gerstein, where he represents clients in matters related to a variety of technologies including process control, wireless communication, software development, and retail systems. His practice is focused on patent prosecution, patentability and freedom-to-operate opinions, and intellectual property counseling. Additionally, Mr. Protas serves on Marshall, Gerstein & Borun’s diversity and pro bono committees, and participates in the Firm’s marketing and community outreach efforts, particularly in the LGBT community. Mr. Protas joined the Board of the Directors for the National LGBT Bar Association in 2010, and currently serves on the association’s membership committee and as co-chair of the association’s Affiliate Congress.
