Patent Agent Derek Barnett, Ph.D. will be a featured lecturer for the California Los Padres Section of the American Chemical Society (CALPACS) as part of CALPACS annual Pi Day Talk. Derek will discuss the basics of patent law, the requirements of an invention, and the basic anatomy of a chemical based patent. He will also highlight how patent law allows for the protection of intellectual property, enables advancements in research and development, and fuels innovation.

Derek has nearly two decades of experience prosecuting patent applications in the U.S. and abroad within the areas of chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology arts. He is an active member of the American Chemical Society.

CALPACS represents members ACS members residing in the tri-county area of California: San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.
