Marshall Gerstein Partner Cameron Pick published a column in Blockworks discussing the coexistence of open source and patents in the crypto space as part of a healthy ecosystem for innovation.

After a feud broke out last year in the crypto industry about concerns over the potential issue of patents, skepticism on behalf of open source developers toward the patent system is a meaningful conversation. However, as Cameron explains in his article, companies pursue patents for many reasons, not the least of which is that they serve as powerful signals to investors, recognizing a company’s development of groundbreaking products or processes.

Cameron explores several reasons a patent might be filed and encourages those in the crypto space to feel empowered to explore patent protection. Read Cameron's article in Blockworks titled "Crypto Can Benefit From Patents Without Losing Its Open Source Ethos" that published on February 6, 2024.
