It is with deep sadness and heartfelt gratitude that we remember and honor the life of Jim Warriner, 48, a dedicated attorney and cherished colleague at Marshall Gerstein. Jim passed away on January 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of professional excellence, kindness, and an enduring commitment to his clients and peers.
Jim brought more than a decade of legal expertise to the Electrical & Computer Technologies Group at Marshall Gerstein. His extensive experience in patent litigation and prosecution, combined with a background in computer networking and information security, made him an invaluable asset to our firm. Prior to embarking on his legal career, Jim worked with renowned companies such as Ford Motor Company, Symantec Corp., and TruArx, Inc., where he honed his technical knowledge in the fields of networking and cybersecurity. This technical expertise, paired with his legal acumen, enabled him to counsel clients on complex patent issues across a broad spectrum of technologies, from semiconductors to Bluetooth to content caching.
Jim’s intellectual property work was outstanding. He had a profound impact on numerous patent portfolios, advising on matters ranging from patent applications and inter partes review petitions to litigation strategies and successful trial outcomes. Among his many achievements, Jim won summary judgment in multiple cases, including invalidating patent claims on appeal to the Federal Circuit. His sharp legal mind and meticulous attention to detail were a testament to his dedication to delivering the best results for his clients.
In recognition of his exceptional work, Jim was named a Texas Rising Star in IP Litigation by Thomson Reuters. He was a Certified Information Privacy Professional, further showcasing his commitment to the ever-evolving landscape of intellectual property law.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was known for his warmth, integrity, and willingness to help others. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether bicycling, hiking, canoeing, or riding motorcycles. Jim’s love for adventure and his spirit of camaraderie were evident in everything he did.
Jim leaves behind an indelible mark on the Marshall Gerstein family and the legal community as a whole. He was a trusted colleague, a brilliant attorney, and, most importantly, a dear friend to many. His passing leaves a void that will be felt by all who had the privilege of working with him.
