“As Metaverse Evolves, So Do IP Protection Issues”

In an article published on November 17, 2022 in Law360, Partner Matthew Carey discusses the rise of virtual reality and other immersive technologies and how businesses and individuals are creating experiences, products, and brands that exist only in digital form. In the article, Matt explains how businesses can protect their intellectual property within the metaverse as new technologies and platforms are developed. 

“As the metaverse expands, so too does the need for businesses to protect their intellectual property in the virtual world, as well as government agencies to define how this intellectual property may be properly protected,” Matt explains. 

Matt further examines the legal landscape and software developments of the metaverse. “Over the past few years, there have been significant advancements in both the hardware and software used to create and experience the metaverse,” he says. “Further, as a result of several businesses entering into and expanding their presence within the metaverse throughout 2022, some of the technologies that underpin the metaverse are further taking shape.”
