Groundbreaking technological innovations are transforming the way intellectual property is protected, enforced and managed. That’s according to Marshall Gerstein Partner Matthew Carey, whose insights were published in The Patent Lawyer’s May/June edition.

Matt’s column explores how IP protection will be affected by artificial intelligence, interoperability (meaning the ability of different systems to seamlessly work together) and blockchain, and notes that stakeholders and policymakers must adapt and evolve.

Matt notes that IP owners can pursue potential infringers more efficiently by using AI to review vast amounts of data to pinpoint relevant prior art and applicable patents, while blockchain can provide a tamper-proof and traceable record of patent ownership and transfer. Interoperability, Matt explains, can reduce the cost and complexity associated with IP protection by allowing various systems to communicate and share information.

“By fostering collaboration, embracing transparency, and striking a balance between protection and accessibility, we can ensure that our IP frameworks remain efficient, robust, and relevant,” Matt writes.
