ICANN Meeting To Be Held March 11–16, 2012 – MGB Will Be There

March 11, 2012

Costa Rica

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will hold its meeting in Costa Rica March 11–16, 2012. Among the many areas which ICANN and its stakeholder groups will cover during this meeting are: the status of the new TLD registration program, comments on the perceived need for defensive registration of new gTLDs, proposed changes to WHOIS policy, enhanced protection of International Olympic Committee and Red Cross names, the proposed new Registrar Accreditation Agreement, development of Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy and Post-Expiration Domain Name Recovery Policy, a review of ICANN’s compliance program, and developments in the new gTLD process – including the Trademark Clearinghouse, string contention definitions of "confusingly similar", and other issues relating to new top-level domain program.

With the closing of the new gTLD application period on April 12, 2012, this promises to be an important meeting that will have a major influence on the scope of the program and the final rules and resources for trademark protection in the Domain Name System.

Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP will be on the ground at the meeting. If you have any specific issues you would like us to address concerning the meeting, ICANN, or the new gTLDs and their impact on your trademark or intellectual property rights, please contact Gregory J. Chinlund, Chair of the Firm’s Trademark & Copyright practice.
