Biography

Alan is an attorney with the firm’s Electrical & Computer Technologies practice group. His work combines his strong background in electrical and computer engineering with his passion for writing. Alan represents clients in prosecuting patents in computer software, communications devices, and optoelectronics.

Most recently, he was selected for inclusion in the 2026 edition of The Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America™ list in the practice area of Patent Law. 

Alan served as a member of the firm’s peer-elected Associates Committee.

Outside of work, Alan enjoys writing and editing short stories, reading, fishing, and adding to his board game collection.

Background and Credentials

Alan received his degree in Electrical and Computer engineering with a concentration in Optoelectronics and Superconductivity from the University of Rochester. Alan received the  Donald M. Barnard Prize for excellence in engineering as an undergraduate student. In graduate school, he researched Superconducting Single Photon Detectors and their potential applications at the Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

At the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Alan participated heavily in the IP program, serving as the Faculty Liaison and then Vice President of the Chicago-Kent chapter of the IP Law Society. Alan also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property, where he worked with professionals who were extraordinarily well-versed in the field.

Alan joined Marshall Gerstein as an Associate in 2020. He previously served as a Summer Associate supporting clients of the firm's Electrical & Computer Technologies practice group.
