Carolyn is a Patent Agent within Marshall Gerstein’s Biotechnology & Life Sciences Practice Group. Carolyn leverages her strong background in infectious disease and molecular biology to assist life sciences clients in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, as well as in freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses.

Representative Experience

  • Preparing and prosecuting patent applications directed to compositions, processes, and methods of use for biologics, molecular biology techniques, devices, and computational biology-based software
  • Managing several family portfolios in biologics, molecular biology techniques, devices, and computational biology-based software
  • Drafting patent applications and preparing Office Action responses for the USPTO and provided analysis and remarks for non-US Office Actions
  • Conducting prior art search and landscape analysis to advise claim strategy
  • Patent litigation

Background and Credentials

Carolyn received her Ph.D. in Biomedical and Veterinary Medical Sciences from Louisiana State University in 2023. She developed a protocol to differentiate human neurons and direct axonal growth through microfluidic devices. Combining this system with a series of targeted mutations of structural viral proteins, she studied alterations to the transport of viral capsids through neurons and alterations to innate immune recognition of live-attenuated herpes simplex virus (HSV) vaccines. Additional research experience includes studies concerning innate immune recognition of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), antibiotic-mediated immune modulation following Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, discovery and characterization of novel mycobacteriophages, and study of cloud forest regrowth following deforestation.

Prior to her Ph.D., Carolyn achieved a B.S. in Biology from Stephens College.
