South Africa Issues the World’s First Patent Listing an AI as the Sole Inventor

On July 28, 2021, South Africa issued the world's first patent listing an AI inventor. The inventor is DABUS ("Device for the Autonomous Bootstrapping of Unified Sentience"). This is a departure from all other countries and jurisdictions that have addressed the issue of whether an AI can be an inventor. To date, each country, now with the exception of South Africa, has required a human inventor (see: "Can an Artificial Intelligence (AI) be an Inventor?").
