Marshall Gerstein Partner Ryan Phelan has been named a winner in two Mondaq Thought Leadership Awards categories for Autumn 2023 – Intellectual Property, United States, and Fin Tech, United States. Ryan is being recognized for the thorough, informative, and trending topics he blogs about on PatentNext.com, a patent and IP law blog focusing on next-generation and new-age technologies that he also moderates.

The Mondaq Thought Leadership Awards are released twice yearly in the spring and autumn, and showcase top authors and co-authors based on total readership for the previous 6 months. The awards recognize winners across a number of countries and multiple topic areas. The Awards are a testament to the individuals who consistently provide high-quality, insightful content and play a crucial role in shaping legal and business landscapes.

Ryan Phelan is a registered U.S. patent attorney who counsels and works with clients in all areas of intellectual property (IP), with a focus on patents. As a former technology consultant with Accenture and with a background in computer science and engineering, Ryan has extensive experience in computer system, hardware, and software design, engineering, development and related technologies. He represents numerous startup and Fortune 500 clients with patent matters in technical areas and industries including artificial intelligence and machine learning, medical devices, biometrics data and services, virtual reality, imaging, internet and e-commerce, computer networking, data storage and management, encryption and security, mobile telecommunications, consumer electronics, insurance and finance applications, mechanical devices, among others.

Ryan is also an adjunct professor at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law teaching course work on patenting software inventions. He is also a frequent author and contributor to AIPLA and IPO white papers and articles, and frequently writes on the subject of AI at his blog PatentNext at patentnext.com. Ryan is also currently serves as co-chair of the Augmented and Virtual Reality subcommittee of the Emerging Technologies Committee.
