The Japanese Patent Office (JPO) has provided patent examination case examples pertinent to artificial intelligence (AI) related technologies. The case examples provide hypothetical claims in various technologies (e.g., autonomous driving, bodyweight estimation, cancer level calculation, etc.) and show that AI patents are patentable in Japan in much the same way as they are in the U.S. - by demonstrating and claiming an improvement to an underlying technical system and by describing that improvement as part of an AI workflow (e.g., pre-processing of training data) in a patent application.
