“How Patents Power the Future of Sustainable Sports Products”
October 3, 2024In a unique look at how cleantech innovation touches all technological areas, Marshall Gerstein partner Ryan Schermerhorn and technical specialist Topher Zahn recently authored a column for Sports Business Journal evaluating the critical role of patent protection in safeguarding inventions and portfolios.
There has been a significant increase in research and development in renewable energy, and sports products and equipment are no exception. “This reflects the growing importance of innovation in achieving climate goals and transitioning to a low-carbon economy,” the authors note. “This trend has also led to increased patent application filings related to renewable energy technology.”
Perhaps the best example of the impact of cleantech innovation in sports is the golf sector. “Electric golf carts, such as ride-along and assisted push carts, and equipment used to maintain the course are just a few examples of how cleantech innovation is changing the game.”
Ryan and Topher point to programs like the USPTO’s Climate Change Mitigation Pilot Program, First-Time Filer Expedited Examination Pilot Program, the Semiconductor Technology Pilot Program, and the Track One Prioritized Patent Examination Program as encouragement for sports innovators to incorporate cleantech initiatives into their products.
