June 11, 2014

Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP is pleased to announce that its Transactions, Patent Prosecution, and Patent Litigation practices have received top national rankings in Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine’s 2014 edition of the IAM Patent 1000The World's Leading Patent Practitioners, which identifies top patent firms and practitioners in key jurisdictions around the globe. The firm was ranked as highly recommended for transactions and prosecution and recommended for litigation. The guide describes the firm as “Business-oriented, client-centric and user-friendly,” with “experienced teams across the patent spectrum.” Additionally, seven of the firm’s partners were selected for inclusion as “top patent practitioners” and recognized individually in the guide.

According to IAM, the firm’s IP Litigation department “recently flaunted its ability to secure wins in the most demanding suits by obtaining a complete defense victory for Illumina against Life Technologies in a dispute concerning DNA sequencing instruments.” IP litigation partners Kevin Flowers, Ph.D. and Kevin Hogg, are recommended:

“Kevin Flowers, the chief trial counsel on the [Illumina] case, 'goes beyond the purely legal and theoretical to give practical and commercial counsel.' 'He is a customer-friendly, responsive lawyer who is great for especially tricky litigation matters.' Kevin Hogg leads the litigation group with a steady hand.”

Pamela Cox, Partner and Chair of IP Transactions, is highly recommended for transactions.

“Division chair Pamela L. Cox 'is fantastic on complex licensing deals and, as a result of her vast experience, can be extremely persuasive in negotiations.' Brokering agreements with and on behalf of universities is a major component of her practice, as 'she is one of the few lawyers who really understands how academia works.'”

Robert Gerstein, Partner, is recommended for transactions.

“Leveraging over two decades of experience, licensing sage Robert M. Gerstein is admired for his astute negotiation of litigation settlement transactions and for the innovative provisions he builds into gainful contracts.”

IAM says of the firm’s Patent Prosecution practice: "For prosecution and counseling, [Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP] really stands out and is a go-to choice for conflict of interest referrals." Partners Katherine Neville, Ph.D. and Jeffrey Sharp are recommended for prosecution.

The IAM Patent 1000 lists top litigators, licensing advisors and patent prosecutors, based on interviews with more than 1,500 attorneys and in-house counsel across the world. Individuals qualify for a listing when they receive sufficient positive feedback from peers and clients with knowledge of their practice and the market within which they operate. According to IAM, "only those individuals identified by market sources for their exceptional skill sets and profound insights into patent matters feature in the IAM Patent 1000."
